about

From Irv Peckham: When explaining why on earth she had ever married me, Sarah would say that her mother had always told her to marry someone who sings in the shower. That was me. I probably got my love of singing from my mother, who went to church only to sing. An atheist, she waited for those moments when it was time to pick up the hymns. From anywhere in the church, you could hear her voice.

I spend most of my waking hours with some kind of song in my head. I hum when I walk down the street. I sing myself to sleep. Several decades ago, I picked up the guitar and stuck with it so that I would have someone to sing with.

I don’t imagine myself as a strong guitarist—I play to sing. I don’t really need to have people listen to me. I just have this need for music to come out of me. It’s the same with writing. For me, writing and singing are the same.

I started writing songs after Sarah died. I made the mistake sometime later of trying to find someone else to love. Others have made that mistake, and that’s why we write the blues.
