Scott Pleasant has been the Writing Center Coordinator at Coastal Carolina University for almost five years. Like all of us in the profession, he spends his days trying to help students improve their writing and mentoring his staff of graduate and undergraduate tutors. He comes to the SWCA conference every year, usually with yet another presentation on writing center assessment. But that's just his day job. At night, he continues to believe that he can write songs and record them. It's a silly dream that began, like most silly dreams do, in high school, when he wasn't a good enough athlete to get attention that way, so he decided to play guitar instead. The volume knob on the amplifier made it impossible for people to ignore the noise he was making, a fact that Scott interpreted as interest in his art. Since then, serious critics have failed to try to reach a strong consensus on the value of Scott's contributions to music, but one thing is certain: Over the years, he's played in a figurative and literal rolodex of bands in several southeastern cities (Johnson City, TN; Auburn, AL; and Myrtle Beach, SC). Scott's main two claims to fame are that he has the biggest ukulele collection (31) in all of Conway, South Carolina and that he once won a Gibson SG in an online video contest that was allegedly judged by the members of AC/DC. His song "Love Conquers Nothing" was written as part of the background music for a theatre production at Coastal Carolina University. If the words to the song sound cynical and depressing, that's because it was a cynical and depressing play. Scott's actually a happy guy in "real life." That's why he plays the ukulele.
