From Aaron Harms: This is one of maybe only two songs that I’ve ever written without an instrument in my hands. It’s also one of a handful that came together over an extended period of time, rather than in one or two sittings. I was commuting a lot at the time, and putting the main melodies and chord structures together (and trying to remember them). I didn’t end up physically writing out the lyrics until after the record was out. We chose it for the opening track because we hoped it would “teach” folks what the band sounds like….not sure how well that worked out, but that was the plan : ).
